What Does It Feel Like to Be “In Character”?
Scrapping the “expert model” approach to acting, based in criticism and ideas of “good acting” which plague the actor, Embodied Character offers a new approach to pleasurably be in the creative-unknown. Embodied Character encourages the actor’s ability to intuitively create character experiences within their own body. Using the body and its wisdom as a way into understanding the character’s reality, Embodied Character recognizes that acting is simply about the experience of being in character. Everything else takes care of itself when the actor is allowed to let themselves be.
Embodied Character is an evolution of method acting, allowing the actor to find the heart and body of the character within their own system. Embodied (to give body to spirit) Character (symbol marked or branded on the body) is a creative practice that values what wants to come through the actor. It’s for professionals and beginners alike and is designed towards creating and being characters that tell a story.
A Somatic Approach to Acting
I will be courageous - bringing all my resistance with me
I am willing to breathe deeply, move my body and bring my voice - I am willing to give up withholding and editing
I will welcome all parts of me, the hurt, the angry, the critical, the scared, the young, the playful - I will welcome my multitudes and their wisdom
I am willing to express on the outside what’s happening on the inside
I am willing to let things be messy and imperfect, to express my awkwardness, shame and darkness just as they are
I accept the invitation to be more not less
I am willing to give up control, let my body express itself without measure
I am willing to take risks, to tolerate discomfort and fear, I am willing to stay
I will support both the expansion of my colleagues and myself
I commit to keeping myself, others and the room safe
I am willing to connect with others, to let my defences down, I am willing, even at great risk to bring my truth forward
I am willing to bring out my higher self qualities and my connection to the collective unconscious—I will open myself to the spirt of all things
